Spanish ‘Purple Rain’ Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) is a fragrant, compact tender perennial (often grown as an annual in colder climates) known for its rich purple flower heads topped with showy violet bracts that resemble small butterfly wings. Its neat, mounded habit and silvery-green, aromatic foliage make it an excellent choice for containers, borders, and herb gardens, where it adds both bold colour and soothing fragrance. Blooming from late spring into summer, it attracts bees and other pollinators while enhancing sunny plantings. In Manitoba, it is grown as a warm-season annual, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil but sensitive to frost.

Light Requirements
Prefers full sun. For best flowering and compact growth, provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Water Requirements
Prefers well-drained soil with light to moderate watering. Allow soil to dry between waterings, as lavender is drought tolerant once established and does not tolerate wet conditions.

Toxicity
Generally considered non-toxic to humans, but may cause mild gastrointestinal upset in pets if ingested in larger quantities, so some caution is advised.
