Hollyhock Black Watchman Seeds are a stunning heirloom variety once grown by Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello estate. Carefully reselected by Dutch seedsmen for their classic form and rich color, these tall plants boast large 3 to 4-inch hibiscus-like blossoms in a deep maroon that fades to black. The blooms unfurl slowly on strong 5 to 7-foot stalks, creating a striking garden display that pairs beautifully with surrounding flowers. For best results, sow seeds directly in full sun and well-worked soil, ½ inch deep and 6 to 8 inches apart, after the last frost. Keep moist until germination in 7 to 14 days. To start indoors, sow seeds 2 inches apart and ½ inch deep in seed-starting mix, 8 weeks before the last frost, providing strong light and keeping the mix moist. When seedlings reach 3 to 4 inches tall, acclimate them to outdoor conditions and transplant 18 to 24 inches apart. Black Watchman may bloom in the first year if planted early, or the following summer if planted later. After blooming, cut back spent flower stalks, fertilize, and continue watering to encourage a second flush of flowers in the fall.
