Blue Monkshood
Aconitum napellus
Elegant and mysterious, Blue Monkshood is a striking perennial prized for its tall spires of deep violet-blue, hooded flowers that bloom in mid to late summer. Resembling the cowl of a medieval monk, the uniquely shaped blossoms rise above lush, deeply cut green foliage, adding vertical interest and rich color to borders, woodland edges, and cottage gardens.
This plant thrives in cooler climates and prefers partial shade, making it an excellent choice for areas where other summer bloomers may struggle. Its upright, clumping habit makes it ideal for the back of a border or naturalized garden settings where its dramatic form can shine.
Important note: All parts of Monkshood are highly toxic if ingested, and gloves should be worn when handling—so plant with care in gardens where children or pets may be present.
Despite its toxicity, Blue Monkshood is a low-maintenance, long-lived perennial that offers showy blooms with minimal effort and is largely unbothered by deer and rabbits.
