Big Bluestem Grass
Andropogon gerardii
Tall, architectural, and full of movement, Big Bluestem is a native prairie grass that brings texture, seasonal colour, and ecological value to Canadian landscapes. Known as the "king of the prairie," this warm-season perennial grass forms upright clumps of blue-green foliage that transition to rich shades of copper, burgundy, and bronze in fall.
From mid to late summer, distinctive, three-pronged flower heads—resembling a turkey foot—emerge atop tall stems, adding height and visual interest. These airy seed heads persist into winter, providing food for birds and winter structure in naturalistic plantings.
Growing 4–6 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide, Big Bluestem is ideal for meadows, prairie-style gardens, pollinator strips, and low-maintenance landscapes. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils but is incredibly adaptable—tolerating drought, poor soils, and urban conditions once established.
Hardy to Zone 2, this native grass is a resilient and beautiful option for Canadian gardeners seeking natural texture, movement, and wildlife support throughout the seasons.
