High quality Kentucky Bluegrass sod, grown on mineral soil base (present in Winnipeg and surrounding areas).

Our sod is a blend of a minimum of 4 different varieties of Bluegrass to improve adaptability and allow the sod to flourish. The varieties are selected for:

  • A quick spring green-up
  • A lush dark green summer colour
  • A soft, thick grass
  • An extended dark green fall colour
  • Good resistance to diseases
  • Ability to adjust easily to various soil types

Installation & sod care

Sod is extremely perishable. Install immediately, protect your investment.

Begin installing sod along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or sidewalk. Butt and push edges and ends against each other tightly, without stretching. Avoid gaps or overlaps. Stagger the joints in each row in a brick-like fashion, using a large sharp knife to trim corners, etc. Avoid leaving small strips at outer edges, as they will not retain moisture. On slopes, place the sod pieces across the slope.

To avoid causing indentations or air pockets avoid repeated walking or kneeling on the sod while it is being installed or just after watering

  • The first 72 hours after your new sod is laid is the most critical time for your new sod
  • Deep watering so that when you lift sod edges it is nice and damp (at least once per day) for 2 weeks
  • Continue with watering on a regular basis to insure your newly sodded area stays lush and green
  • In weather above 20 degrees water twice a day
  • Early morning watering and late evening is suggested
  • We also suggest not to cut for 2-3 weeks (to promote joints to join nicely)
  • The first cut to you newly sodded area, use your mower on the highest level, cut like this for 4-6 weeks
  • Bring down levels slowly every 2 weeks until regular level is reached
  • Do not fertilize for at least 6 weeks depending on the time of year of the installation, sod is pre-fertilized
  • Continue with watering on a regular basis to insure your newly sodded area stays lush and green
  • After you wait for six weeks with no fertilizer, you can start to fertilize on a regular fertilizing schedule

Sod is not warranted unless all the above is performed, and sod area is prepped by Alternative Landscaping and laid by Alternative Landscaping.
