Gardener’s Notes:
Sow seeds directly in the garden in spring or start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Hollyhocks thrive in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds on the soil surface and lightly press in or cover with a thin layer of soil. Keep soil consistently moist until germination occurs. Thin or transplant seedlings to 18–24 inches apart for proper airflow. Water deeply during dry spells and provide support if plants grow tall in windy areas. Hollyhocks may bloom the first year but are commonly grown as biennials or short-lived perennials and will readily self-seed.
